Easy Auto Maintenance to Increase MPGs

Gas prices have dipped lately, and they are forecast to drop even further in the next few months. However just because gasoline is more affordable doesn't mean that you shouldn't be doing everything possible to ensure you're getting the best possible miles per gallon. There are several things you can do to maintain factory fuel efficiency, each of which have to do with following your car's suggested scheduled maintenance calendar, which can be found inside the vehicle owner's manual.

New air filter

If the air filter becomes clogged with dirt and debris then it will not be able to let enough air into the combustion chamber to mix with the gasoline. This can result in the vehicle compensating by burning additional gas, thus decreasing fuel economy. This is a cheap and fast maintenance item that needs to be done as necessary.

Change the spark plugs

Replacing the spark plugs is another part of scheduled maintenance that should not be forgotten. The plugs are what produce the tiny explosion which ignites the air and fuel mixture inside the engine to pump the pistons. If the plugs become dirty or corroded they may misfire, wasting fuel and causing the engine to run very poorly.

Complete oil changes on time

Oil changes are necessary for most vehicles every 3,000 miles. It is important to never put off this service because when old oil is drained from the engine it brings dirt and grime out with it. This debris turns the oil into a sludge like substance which makes it difficult for the engine to properly run.

Ensure tires are properly inflated

Your tires have a very important job, they keep your car connected to the roadway. However if they are underinflated it will take more power from the engine to to get the soft rubber to turn. This in effect decreased fuel efficiency.

Fix any known problems

Of course, if you're aware of any problems with your vehicle you should have them fixed, because more than likely they are draining your vehicle of fuel. This includes getting the check engine light that's staring you in the face diagnosed.
