Unfortunate Signs it is Time for Engine Repair

There are some things we as vehicle owners hope we have to never deal with, such as a major engine failure. A problem with the engine can lead to expensive repairs and may even require an engine rebuild or replacement. However, if caught early enough there may be time to conduct smaller repairs that will extend the life of your vehicle's current power plant. If you notice any of these symptoms of engine failure be sure to head to the local auto repair shop before ending up stuck on the shoulder.

Excessive Exhaust Smoke

One of the most common signs of engine failure is excessive smoke coming out of the tail pipe. Depending on the color of the smoke you can somewhat determine what the problem in the engine is. Black smoke means too much gasoline is being burnt up, which greatly increases engine temperature. White smoke is a sign of a coolant leak in which coolant is being burnt up inside the engine, also putting the vehicle at risk of overheating. Blue smoke generally indicates an internal oil leak, which can lead to aggressive metal on metal friction between the moving parts causing excessive wear and tear.

Knocking Noise

The moving parts of the engine rest on engine bearings. If they become worn out due to high mileage or a lack of oil they will begin to knock. This noise will increase or decrease with the engine RPMs. If you hear a knocking noise under the hood get to the repair shop right away for the best chance of saving the engine.

Metal Flakes in Oil

When the oil is changed in your vehicle make sure the old oil is inspected for metal flakes. If they are found this is an indication of metal on metal contact that is causing major wear on the colliding parts and likely means there is a section of the engine that is starved for oil.

Loss in Power

If you find your car becoming harder and harder to get up to speed or if it has trouble climbing hills it is likely due to an internal engine problem. Head to the repair shop and talk about the troubles you've been having and let the technician take the car for a test drive to have the problem properly diagnosed.

If you're experiencing engine trouble it is important to take care of it immediately so that your engine doesn't completely fail and leave you in need of a tow truck.
