4 Common Signs of Suspension Trouble

The suspension system is often thought of as the parts that provide comfort to the vehicle’s ride while cruising down the highway. While this is true it also does much more. The suspension is responsible for keeping all four wheel on the ground at all times, ensuring proper braking power. It also prevents the vehicle from rolling over or otherwise losing control during cornering, especially at higher speeds. If the suspension system begins to fail it is important to have it repaired as soon as possible to prevent control issues, as well as to maintain a comfortable ride. If you experience any of these signs it’s time for suspension repair call your local auto repair shop right away.

Excessive Bouncing

One of the first signs of suspension trouble usually involves excessive bouncing. You can test the suspension by pushing on the hood or the trunk several times to get the vehicle to start moving up and down. Once you stop pushing the car should return to its normal ride height within 3 to 4 bounces. If it continues to bounce there is reason to believe the shocks or struts need to be replaced.

One Corner of the Car is Low

If you discover that one corner of your car appears to be lower than the rest you will likely assume you have a flat tire. But if upon closer inspection you discover all of the tires seem to before then you can come to the conclusion that the suspension in that particular corner of the vehicle has failed and needs to be replaced. Be sure to check for an oily substance on the outside of the struts, as this will be another indicator of strut problems.

Pulling or Veering

Another common sign of failed suspension is a vehicle that drifts to the side. This will happen because the vehicle is not sitting evenly, causing a weight distribution issue. A drifting vehicle is of concern because it is a control issue that will also increase tire wear and decrease fuel efficiency.

Rolling Sensation

One of the scariest symptoms of suspension trouble is the sensation your vehicle is going to roll over or spin out during cornering. This will happen if the anti-sway bar has failed. This particular piece of the suspension system helps to shift the vehicle’s center of gravity to prevent rollovers.

The suspension is a very integral part of the vehicle that provides a safe and comfortable ride.
