Common Signs of an Exhaust Leak

Common Signs of an Exhaust LeakThe exhaust has one of the hardest jobs out of any system in the vehicle, even though it has no moving parts past the exhaust valves inside the engine. It is designed to route the hazardous exhaust fumes from the engine, past the passenger cabin, through the catalytic converter which helps reduce vehicle pollution by turning the gases into less harmful emissions before releasing the smoke out of the tailpipe. Faults in the exhaust system can result in a number of problems, not the least of which include health problems for the driver and passengers. If you suspect an a problem due to one of these following signs of an exhaust leak be sure to head to your local auto shop for further diagnostics immediately.

Increased Engine Noise

One of the functions of the exhaust system is to dampen engine noise. Leaks are likely to cause an increase in engine sounds inside the passenger cabin. While it may sound like your vehicle's engine is rumbling with power, it is actually struggling to perform properly. Changes in the way your vehicle sounds as it operates should always be an indication that it's time for a visit to the auto shop.

Vibrating Gas Pedal

As exhaust fumes escape from their intended route it is probable that they will cause some shaking and vibrating throughout the vehicle. This is often most felt in the gas pedal due to its location on the floor just above the exhaust system. It is likely the vibration will grow worse as you accelerate, especially up to highway speeds.

Decreased Fuel Economy

The exhaust system contains the oxygen sensor which reads how much oxygen is in the exhaust. This measurement helps to determine how much fuel should be burned in the engine. If a leak is present the oxygen sensor will believe there is excessive amounts of oxygen in the gas, which causes it to believe the car is running lean. This results in more gas being sent to the engine when it is unnecessary, resulting in a drop in fuel economy by 25 percent or more!

Check Engine Light

There are many things that can cause the check engine light to come, which includes many types of exhaust leaks. If your car's check engine light has come on be sure to visit the shop for proper computer diagnostics.
