Is it Time for Brake Repair?

Is it Time for Brake Repair?Without a doubt it is the brakes that are the most important safety feature of any car or truck. While airbags and seatbelts are great in the event of an unfortunate accident, it is the brakes that could very well stop that accident from ever occurring. If you experience any of the following signs of braking trouble be sure to visit your local auto shop for professional, life saving brake repair.

Grinding or Squealing

One of the first signs many people notice when it comes to brake trouble is a grinding, squealing or whining noise that occurs when the depress the brake pedal. This is a clear sign of low brake pads, an issue that greatly reduces the braking power of the vehicle. The sound you're hearing is metal grinding on metal.

Pulling When Braking

If your car seems to veer left or right when you hit the brakes there is a chance of uneven brake pad wear. However, this problem can be cause by more serious issues, such as a malfunctioning wheel cylinder or contamination in the brake fluid.

Soft Brake Pedal

Does it seem like your vehicle's brake pedal rests closer to the floor or is now spongy and soft? While this may indicate very low brake pads it is not improbable that the issue is being caused by air in the brake lines or a brake fluid leak. Each of these are very serious problems that need to be addressed immediately.

Brake Pedal Vibrates

A shaking, shimmying or vibrating brake pedal is often the result of warped brake rotors. The rotors are what the brake pads rub against to create the friction necessary to slow the vehicle. If the rotors are warped it reduces the surface area available to the pads, thus increasing the distance needed to bring the car to a stop.

ABS Light Illuminated

The ABS (antilock braking system) dashboard indicator light is the check engine light of the brakes. It will turn on if sensors in the brake system have detected some sort of problem. Proper diagnostics will need to be done to identify the issue.
