What does an oil change do?

What does an oil change do?Routine auto maintenance, such as fluid flushes and belt and hose replacements, may seem like a pain, but they are a necessity to ensure reliability. Luckily these services only need to be done every once in a blue moon. Oil changes, on the other hand, are necessary much more often, as most vehicles require an oil change every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. Going in for an oil change may seem like a chore, but just like other auto maintenance, it's critical if you want a healthy vehicle. So what is it about oil changes that makes them so important? Fresh oil does a few things to keep the motor running smooth.

Clean out the engine

As oil circulates through the engine it picks up tiny dirt and debris that makes its way inside, which turns the oil into a sludge like substance. The muddy oil is unable to provide the lubrication properties that fresh oil can, causing reductions in performance. Additionally, much of this grime ends up clogging the oil filter, which restricts oil flow. When a technician changes the oil and the filter the old oil is drained, bringing all that sludge with it. Upon adding new oil the performance factors will be restored.

Regulate temperature

A huge part of ensuring the engine has clean, fresh oil is so that the engine operating temperature does not peak. While the cooling system can generally keep the temps down, oil does so it a way it can't. By providing lubrication between the moving parts heat creation is actually reduced since there is less friction being created. As oil ages it loses its ability to lubrication, which can cause an increase in heat that can damage multiple components of the engine.

Engine lubrication

As you may have guessed by the above, engine oil is critical for lubricating the moving parts of the engine. Without fresh oil, an increase in friction between the motor's moving parts will occur, resulting in excessive wear and tear. To prevent premature engine failure always keep up with oil changes.
