Why is the Check Engine Light On?
Many people find the check engine light to be nothing but a nuisance but in reality you should pay close attention to your vehicle when the little orange light begins to glow. More than likely there isn't some major problem like you will immediately suspect, but a small issue that can be quickly and affordably repaired. The following are some of the most common check engine light issues in modern vehicles. Remember though, get the issue diagnosed as soon as the light comes on in order to reduce the chances of the problem growing, as demonstrated by this first issue.
Failed Catalytic Converter
If it is found that the check engine light is producing a code that states the catalytic converter has failed you're in for an expensive repair. Unfortunately this likely could have been prevented if the vehicle was brought in for service sooner. The catalytic converter won't fail unless another problem developed first, which more than likely would have triggered the vehicle's check engine light first.
Bad MAF Sensor
The mass airflow sensor is designed to measure incoming air and calculate how much of it needs to be mixed with the gas in order to produce a well running engine. If the MAF sensor becomes dirty or if the air filter is clogged and preventing it from taking proper measurements it will likely result in the vehicle running rich, which means it is using too much gasoline to operate.
Malfunctioning O2 Sensor
The oxygen sensor, like the MAF sensor, also helps to dictate the air and fuel mixture the engine runs on, but it does it from the other end of the vehicle. This sensor measure oxygen in the gas and if it misreads it and thinks there is an excess of exhaust, which could also happen if there is an exhaust leak, the car will end up running rich.
Misfiring Spark Plugs
A vehicle with spark plugs that are not clean or have become corroded will not fire at the proper time, or at all. This will result in an engine that cannot perform correctly, and you'll likely notice your car idling rough or stalling. Replacing the spark plugs is a fairly simple task when performed by a professional mechanic.
Loose or Broken Gas Cap
Your best hope is a broken or loose gas cap, as this will cause the check engine light to come on because fuel vapors will evaporate out of the filler hose if the cap is not tightly closed.
